Google chases Adwords revenue
Google is now allowing companies without gaming licences to use adwords to promote gaming services in the UK, subject to its approval and subject to terms and conditions that include prominent links to gambleaware.co.uk or gamcare.org.uk as well as age validation systems.
Referring to the decision to allow licensed gambling operators to use Adwords in October last year, a Google spokesman said, "We have now updated and extended this policy to allow aggregator or comparison sites and sports spread betting services to run gambling ads. However, aggregator and comparison sites can only advertise links to gambling services not operated or controlled by them and, like the original policy, these advertisers can only target their ads in the UK."
Despite its dominant position in the search engine market, Google is not immune to the economic downturn - it recently cut 100 jobs in its recruitment division, put a halt to several less popular projects and closed three engineering offices. The company also relaxed its own rules on alcohol-related advertising.
