Growth slowing in Macau

Gross casino gaming revenue in Macau is slipping, with a ten percent decline in the third quarter of this year as compared to the second quarter, according to figures provided by Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

While Macau may not be immune to the general economic downturn, additional downward pressure is being applied by the Chinese government, which is seeking to reduce the number of Chinese nationals visiting Macau by placing increasing restrictions on visas for its nationals to travel to the resort. Visas for residents of Guangdong, the neighbouring province were originally available once a fortnight, but availability has been progressively reduced to once every three months. Chinese gamblers who could previously make 26 visits to Macau a year, may now only travel to gamble four times a year.
