Bermudan Government to evaluate gaming potential
The Government of Bermuda and the Bermuda Hotel Association (BHA) have joined forces to commission a feasibility study on gaming in Bermuda, in a move that may help to revitalise the country's tourism industry.
According to Dr Ewart Brown, Bermuda's Premier and Minister for Tourism and Transport, there is broad support for some form of gaming in Bermuda from the perspective of hoteliers and other tourism businesses, "but that is not enough to cause the Government to implement it".
"BHA and Government of Bermuda have agreed to engage The Innovation Group, the foremost provider of consulting services in matters of this kind," Dr Ewart said. "The Innovation Group has extensive experience working with governments and in more than one hundred market areas and we are confident that theirs will be an exhaustive study producing the results needed to fully consider this issue. The aim of this feasibility study is to openly and fully address all aspects of this issue so that we make decisions based on facts."
Topics that the study will consider include an assessment of the revenue potential to Bermuda of a gaming market, to include casinos, lotteries, and internet gaming. Approaches to gaming control, legislation and taxation will also be examined, alongside at study of the economic and social impact for the country.
A timescale has not been given by the government for the decision-making process on gaming.
