    Operators of online gambling services remain barred from selling their services to US citizens, who make up around half the world's online gamblers. Despite a recent deal between the EU and USA, firms are no closer to receiving compensation for losses incurred as a result of the US government's effective prohibition on online gambling, which came into force last year in a move that several countries argue breaks World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.

    Former gaming inspector and training officer Janet Miller has set up what she claims is Britain's first independent accredited training school for casino croupiers. Based in Cardiff, South Wales, Professional Croupier Training (PCT) provides intensive instruction on industry standard Blackjack, Poker and American Roulette tables, delivering training based on the new National Occupational Standards (see story above).

  • First UK TV advertising campaign for gambling ‘not irresponsible'

    The first television advertisement for gambling attracted just four complaints, between them alleging that it was irresponsible on five counts. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) also looked at a sixth potential count of irresponsibility, but ruled that no further action was required. None of the complaints, which were examined against the UK's new Advertising Standards codes, were upheld by the ASA.

    The Casino Théâtre Barrière de Toulouse, a multi-leisure centre in France, was opened by Lucien Barrière Hotels and Casinos during the first week of December. The company claims it is the first no-smoking casino in France, and has provided balconies on every floor for smokers' comfort, as well as indoor booths with extractor fans.

    The US government has extracted a settlement worth  $31.5 million from three online giants - Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft. All three neither contest nor admit they received payments from on-line gambling businesses for advertising on-line gambling between 1997 and June 2007.
