Handsome, moi?

G2E was, even to someone as optimistic as I, a pleasant surprise. A lot of business was done, with some companies enjoying their best-ever shows; some great new product was on show too, with highlights from WMS with the new Bluebird 2 cabinet, Shuffle Master with their excellent new electronic card table, and Microsoft’s expansion on last year’s offering, alongside their wonderful Surface technology.

Attendees and exhibitors seemed positive about the future, while acknowledging tough times in the short-term. Lots of talk was about layoffs (at all levels) at some companies, which is never welcome – but better to suffer short-term layoffs than extinction.
Macau is also suffering (see page 16 for more) – hell, everywhere is. I’ve said it before though, and I’ll repeat it now; this si the time to be positive, to share knowledge and information and work together as an industry to ride out this shocking economic time. G2E 2008 has helped show us the way, and it has left me with an upbeat outlook that I hope all attendees share. Bring on IGE in January (see Diary Dates on p58 for details!), and let’s face the challenge of global recession head-on, with the passion and intelligence that is unique to the gaming industry.

Poll

Will the plans for Russia's 'remote' gaming areas go ahead as the State Duma has described?

  • Yes, almost certainly. It's a great idea.
  • Maybe, with a few revisions it could work.
  • Don't be absurd, it's a crazy plan.
