Downtown Vegas faring better than the Strip

Downtown Las Vegas appeared to be out-performing the Strip this summer, with gaming revenue across downtown declining just 5.6 percent year on year during June while the Strip sank 14.8 percent.

That figure meant downtown gaming revenues were still ahead of 2007.

Revenues have been falling in most gambling areas of the U.S. as a result of the economic downturn, with tourism indicators showing a similar hit - Vegas average room rates, for example, were down 25.5 percent.

And Atlantic City suffered roughly on a par with the Strip as gaming revenues dropped 13.6 per cent year on year.

There were a few bright spots, however. In Missouri, which has 12 casinos, July revenues were up four percent year on year as attendance increased.

"I think a large percentage of gamblers are senior citizens and they set their own limits and budget an entertainment amount to spend," Gene McNary, Missouri's Gaming Commission Executive Director, was quoted as saying. "Gambling is their bright lights and toys, they consider it entertainment."
