Alfastreet man climbs for charity
Alfastreet Gaming Instruments in the UK funded an expedition to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money for charity.
The firm's John Seed hopes to raise more than $7000 to buy a powered wheelchair for a disabled child after climbing the mountain, which at nearly 5900 meters is the highest in Africa.
"I knew it was going to be tough," he said, "but had no idea the strain that altitude and lack of oxygen can put on the mind and body, let alone the severe cold at night and on the final 30 hours of the ascent.
"I'm extremely grateful to all the private individuals within the industry who have kindly donated towards the fund. We are currently about halfway there with contributions at just over £2000 [$3200], and I am hoping that with a bit of media exposure and corporate contribution, we should reach our final goal of £4500 [$7300] in time for a presentation of the full amount in January.
The child's wheelchair will be purchased through the charity Chips. Anyone wishing to make a contribution is asked to send a cheque made payable to Chips Charity to John Seed at Alfastreet UK, 49 Atalanta Street, London SW6 6NT.
