Genting goes electronic

British operator Genting Group appears to be embracing electronic gaming, closing one conventional casino in favour of an electronic-only site and opening an electronic-only betting office next to another casino.

Genting is shutting the doors at its Mint Casino in Portsmouth on England’s southern coast, reportedly saying the venue is “no longer commercially viable”. The site – previously the Stanley Casino – is replaced by an electronic gaming and slots venue on Commercial Road, under Genting’s Electric Circus brand.

The new facility, opened in December, joins existing Genting Electric Circus locations in Birmingham, Leicester, Luton and Manchester. Two Rank Group casinos remain open in Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, Inspired Gaming Group is supplying its Virtual Sports System (VSS) for a new licensed betting office next door to Genting’s Electric Circus casino in Birmingham, England.

The venue is believed to be the first licensed betting office in the UK to only offer virtual sports games, without taking any bets on live events.

Virtual games supplied to the Genting operation by Inspired include horse and greyhound racing, soccer and speedway. The company has also installed four of its Rainmaker gaming terminals at the site.

Bobby McGhee, COO of Genting UK, said: “The increasing popularity of Inspired’s Virtual Sports System enhances our strategy for the licensed betting office, which is to broaden our appeal to casino and non-casino customers alike.” It is aimed at customers who may want a more immediate, and briefer, gaming experience than a casino visit.”
