Money Controls responds to industry with DES
Bill validator and cash handling experts Money Controls introduces a new level of security for the industry
With fraudsters becoming increasingly sophisticated, Money Controls have met the needs of the industry by introducing ccTalk DES encryption to its range of cutting-edge products. The introduction of ccTalk DES (or Data Encryption Standard) was in direct response to retailer and operator demand for even greater security on machines installed on the gaming floor.
The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a block cipher (a form of shared secret encryption) that was selected by the National Bureau of Standards (USA) as an official Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for the USA in 1976 and which has subsequently enjoyed widespread use internationally. It is based on a symmetric-key algorithm that uses a 56-bit key. To further improve security DES can be enhanced to Triple DES, which applies the DES cipher to each data block three times.
Money Controls’ DES encrypted products were first launched at IGE in London in January 2010. The products offer a significant weapon in combating fraud. Using literally millions of potential combinations - 72,057,594,037,927,936 to be precise - they are yet another example of innovative thinking from the team at Money Controls.
Unlike existing encryption protocols, every payment device and machine can potentially have a different DES key, which can be changed by the host machine. In fact the machine’s software can be programmed to change the key as frequently as every few minutes.
ccTalk DES encryption is a further development of the ccTalk protocol - widely accepted as the industry standard. As a result of using ccTalk, systems and products can benefit from low-cost hardware, increased security, superior fault-code reporting, and real-time monitoring of cash transaction.
New advanced fraud devices have been developed and are sold amongst fraudsters. Fraud attempts have targeted coin mechanisms, bill validators, hoppers and machine controllers. Consequently Money Controls has rolled DES out across its full product range, including the Ardac Elite bill acceptor, SR3des and SR5des coin acceptors, the SCH5 and Universal hoppers and the Paylink integration module.
Money Controls will be demonstrating how DES works on their stand at this year’s ICE. Tony Morrison, Money Controls’ European Sales Director said: “Security will continue to be a key topic for the gaming industry. While advances in technology have resulted in more efficient gaming machines, they’ve also resulted in increasingly sophisticated fraudsters too. The easy access to printers, scanners and colour photocopiers has meant the appearance of bills of a visually high quality, while higher quality fraud coins are now being produced too. Banks and mints have introduced new notes and higher security bi-metal coins but this won’t solve everything.
“Manufacturers need to respond to operators’ needs for products with increased security, as Money Controls has already done with our range of DES encrypted products. Since we launched DES we’ve had a very positive reaction from customers and the industry as a whole. DES is another example of how Money Controls’ products can benefit customers’ businesses, not only in terms of security, but reliability too.”

Money Controls DES products
Ardac Elite
The Ardac Elite is the first and only field-proven imaging bill validator and has established an excellent reputation, particularly in the demanding environment of casino gaming, where any breakdown or poor acceptance rates can be very costly. The Ardac Elite has state of the art imaging technology to ensure the highest standards of validation. At the same time, it has very high acceptance rates, and will accept ‘street money’ in virtually any state, and inserted at virtually any angle! The Ardac Elite is compatible with almost all gaming machines, and is very easy to use.
Among the innovations you will find on the Ardac Elite is the unique ‘last bill’ technology. If there are any disputes about the last bill entered, either on the gaming display or by simply plugging in a PDA via the USB port, an image of the last note inserted can be displayed.
The Ardac Elite’s state of the art imaging technology and 4-way barcode reader, allows customers to insert barcode tickets in any orientation, increasing acceptance rates and user satisfaction. Furthermore, the Ardac Elite is the ideal bill acceptor for server-based gaming.
Money Controls’ Ardac Elite bill acceptor now comes with DES encryption, offering even greater security against fraud attempts. Existing Ardac Elites can be easily upgraded to include ccTalk DES or ccTalk over USB DES with a simple software download.
SR3des and SR5des Coin Acceptors
From the simplest, low-risk vending applications right through to the most sophisticated use in casino gaming, Money Controls have a coin acceptor to fit all customer needs. Both the SR3des and SR5des coin acceptors feature revolutionary sensor technology which enable them to provide exceptional acceptances rates. They also feature remote download capability, which enables factory-quality coinless programming and diagnostics to take place remotely.
Universal Hopper
This best-selling Money Controls product has sold millions since launch and offers unrivalled performance, reduced operating costs and an extended lifetime. Among the other attributes that make it so popular, is its large capacity which reduces the number of empty or refill cycles. The Universal Hopper can hold up to 1,200 Euros, 950 one pound coins, or 1,500 US 25 cent coins). The Universal Hopper is suitable for almost all global coin sets, including coins with holes, without needing adjustment. It caters for a wide range of coin sizes – from 16mm to 31mm in diameter and from 1.0mm to 3.5mm in thickness – through a choice of just four sizes of payout belt reducing both manufacturing and stockholding costs.
Like all Money Controls’ products, the Universal Hopper provides excellent resistance to fraud and levels of security. Jams are prevented by continuous agitation of the coins in the hopper and the auto-reverse function. The Universal Hopper has a long-life with minimal maintenance, thus reducing the overall cost of ownership.
The Universal Hopper now comes with DES encryption, offering even greater security against fraud attempts.
Compact Hopper
The Compact Hopper range does exactly what the name says, providing a large capacity with a small footprint. This makes it ideal for many applications including retrofit. Like all Money Controls’ hoppers, the Compact range offers high security and high speed, in this case for single denominations. Money Controls have sold over one million of these units worldwide, and they can handle almost all the world’s coins. The Compact range can be used either with standard parallel or ccTalk interfaces. The full range includes the SCH2, SCH3, SCH3e, and the SCH5 which comes with DES encryption, offering even greater security against fraud attempts.
PayLink USB Integration Module
Money Controls designed PayLink to reduce the time to market for PC-based platforms. This innovative product reduces costs and makes it easy to configure peripherals. It means that new applications can be developed without having to create custom payment software. PayLink is now available with DES encryption, offering even greater security against fraud attempts.
