Nottingham–based poker club Dusk Till Dawn recently encountered another setback in their bid to be awarded an opening license. At a hearing held at Nottingham Magistrates Court objections were raised by Stanley Leisure, Gala Coral Group and London Clubs International claiming that their casinos already satisfied demand.
Marketing Director Paul Zimbler said: “Dusk Till Dawn is run by poker players, for poker players.” Because they will be dedicated purely to poker, offering no other table games, Dusk Till Dawn, that already have permission from the UK Gambling Commission to operate, would appear to pose no real threat to the larger casino operators. However they must still prove demand for the club. Over 3,500 applications for membership from interested players suggest that this won’t be a problem but the objections have meant that the outcome of the hearing will not be decided until the conclusion of a four-day hearing beginning September 24.
“The decision was very disappointing but we have to persevere.” General Manager Darren Whiten said, adding: “We’ve gone from wanting to have a quiet card room that we can be proud of, to being the biggest thing [story] in the poker world.
