Hong Kong government: casinos not on the cards
Published:  01 October, 2007

Despite massive revenue growth in Macau, which has overtaken Las Vegas in gross revenues according to gambling regulators in both cities, its near neighbour, Hong Kong, has no plans to compete for tourists or conventions by allowing casinos on its own territory. Other tourism boosters are being explored.

Frederick Ma, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, recently stated: "the government doesn't think it would help the tourism industry if Hong Kong built one or two casinos because Macau has many casinos like Las Vegas."

It seems that the Hong Kong government is shying away from allowing casinos on a matter of principle – currently, it only permits gambling on horse racing, soccer, and a numbers game.

Poll

Will the plans for Russia's 'remote' gaming areas go ahead as the State Duma has described?

  • Yes, almost certainly. It's a great idea.
  • Maybe, with a few revisions it could work.
  • Don't be absurd, it's a crazy plan.
