Republic of Ireland to consider new gambling regulations
Published:  01 January, 2008

The Republic of Ireland's Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan, is currently examining the final report from the Casino Regulation Committee that was set up by his predecessor in autumn 2006.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, Equality and Law reform indicated that the report is likely to be presented to the Cabinet in the near future.

Industry bodies in Ireland, such as the Irish Gaming and Amusement Association, are looking for the Minister to introduce legislation that will bring the laws in their country in line with those in most other European Union member states.

The next step is likely to involve a Select Committee of the Irish parliament, the Dáil which will look into the issues of regulation.

The Irish government has been concerned for some while about the growing number of casinos that operate as private member's clubs,  and a government Financial Action Task Force commented unfavourably on the current situation in Ireland as regards casino operations and money laundering. As a result, the Casino Regulation Committee was created to look into the regulatory options.

Poll

Will the plans for Russia's 'remote' gaming areas go ahead as the State Duma has described?

  • Yes, almost certainly. It's a great idea.
  • Maybe, with a few revisions it could work.
  • Don't be absurd, it's a crazy plan.
