Following months of delay on the promised announcement schedule, and widespread leaks of the outcome of a report, the UK Government's Culture Secretary has told Parliament that there will not be a resort-style ‘supercasino' in the UK. The announcement has disappointed the city of Manchester, which is reserving its position for a legal challenge to the Government, having been promised the one supercasino as a major regeneration project.
Licences for 16 smaller casinos are available and welcomed by some operators, such as Aspers' Chairman Damian Aspinall, who said: "We are pleased that we can finally proceed in conjunction with our various local partners to develop our wonderful new schemes." Other UK operators are less enthusiastic about the opportunities, while major resort developers are shunning the UK. William Weidner, for instance, Chief Operating Officer of Las Vegas Sands referred to the smaller licences as being for "...sub-optimal, lousy little casinos..." The Government's report into regeneration alternatives has been slated as inconclusive.
